 Meiosis- What is It?

        Meiosis is the form of sexual reproduction by which eukaryotic cells divide. During this process, sex cells are made with only half of the normal number of chromosomes. For humans, this number is 23 chromosomes. This allows for the sperm and egg sex cells to combine in order to create a cell with the proper number of chromosomes. Meiosis differs from mitosis in that it creates cells with one set one chromosomes, instead of two. There are eight steps and two parts in this process, each step provides a different part of the process, or in the preparation of the division of a cell. The process of meiosis allows for diversity among siblings, and differentiation between parent cell and daughter cell. This is because the DNA for the cell, along with it's genes and traits, come from two parents, as opposed to one. For a closer look at the first four steps of Meiosis, Click Here.
